The commission
Along with the release of his newest album, Foley Room, Amon wanted to create an online experience that would retain visitors, provoke curiosity about the nre release.
When he approached us, his sound had been shifting from almost exclusively sample-based to a more organic one. The album had been created using real world samples, recorded “in the field” - hence the title of this project, “Field Excursion”.
The Process
Taking inspiration from his music and aesthetic, I started to experiment with organic textures - literally fish and meat. This led to the creation of a series of imaginary marine creatures.
The creatures were then modeled and animated, and integrated into the interface we had created, an immersive, almost empty space designed to be navigated only by moving your mouse up and down. Special attention was applied to the sound environment, with sounds panning and fading according to your position relative to creatures.

Reluctant at first, these gentle animals hide in dark corners of the site, but with proper stimulation (completing a predetermined sequence of actions), they’ll open up, and eagerly show you their crazy dance moves.
Five creatures dances were created, and animated to correspond with field recording samples and original music created by Amon Tobin.
