One Kings Lane wanted to create an engaging, responsive customization experience for users to preview thousands of fabric, pattern, and color combinations on furniture. The challenge was to integrate this feature seamlessly into the existing product page and purchase flow, while accommodating an offshore engineering team and ensuring usability for a broad, style-conscious audience.
The goal was to increase engagement, drive page visits, and generate media coverage, while providing users with an intuitive way to design their own unique furniture pieces. Drawing inspiration from gaming and in-store customization experiences, I set out to create an intuitive, efficient experience, that was also delightful and would drive engagement.

Through rapid iteration cycles, wireframes, and usability studies, we tested hypotheses on flow, pattern selection, and color customization, optimizing for users’ mental models and minimizing confusion. Strategic tweaks—like showing blank patterns in grayscale and introducing a secondary color picker tab—clarified choices, while an improved navigation entry point boosted discoverability.
The final design allowed instant previews of thousands of combinations, resulting in high engagement, extensive media coverage, and industry recognition, with users describing the feature as “addictive” and game-like.

“(…) may we suggest playing around with One Kings Lane's new custom furniture tool? It's addictive. No, seriously!”
